Getting around in Morocco

The best way to see this beautiful country is by renting a car and driving yourself around. Alternatively, you can always book day trips (or multiple days) from one of the many travel agencies in Marrakech.

1 - Marrakech: The Red City

Marrakech, also known as "the Red City," is home to some of Morocco's most iconic cultural sites. One of our favorite places to visit in Marrakech is the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square in the old city (the medina). The Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is one of the busiest squares in Morroco and is full of local food stalls, snake charmers, monkeys, souvenirs, and more. We recommend you visit the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square both at day and night for two completely different experiences! During the day, you will find more souvenir shops and fewer food stalls. At night, more food stalls open, and there are street entertainers on every corner!

Last, if you dare, try a delicious bowl of babbouche (white Morrocan snails served in a warm broth)!

Traveler Tip: Instead of booking a hotel, hostel, or Airbnb, try booking yourself a Riad! Riads are traditional Morrocan-style accommodations with a beautiful garden and pool (or fountain) in the courtyard's center.

2- Ait Ben Haddou

Ait Ben Haddou is an ancient fortified city on the edge of the Atlas Mountains. It was once used as an essential trading post between North Africa and Europe and has since been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. The city's architecture and the blend of colors will take your breath away.

Traveler Tip: Try visiting Ait Ben Haddou during the sunrise hours for a beautiful blend of colors reflecting on the red brick buildings.

3 - Essaouira

If you're looking to take a break from the bigger cities, Essaouira is the place to go. Essaouira is located on the coast of Morocco and is known for its beautiful and laidback beaches. You can easily spend your entire day relaxing at the beach, browsing through local shops, and trying out some delicious seafood from one of the many restaurants near the waterfront.

Last, If you're feeling adventurous, head up north for some kite-surfing or wind-surfing lessons!

4 - The Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are a stunning chain of mountains located in northwestern Morocco. Spanning over 2,500 kilometers and reaching heights of up to 4,000 meters, the Atlas Mountains are an awe-inspiring natural feature. They represent a unique blend of Berber and Arab culture with spectacular views ranging from sandstone cliffs and gorges to lush vegetation and traditional villages. The Atlas Mountains offer fantastic hiking and trekking opportunities for those looking to explore their beauty. Also, if you enjoy skiing, the Atlas Mountains are perfect for winter sports enthusiasts looking for an unforgettable vacation experience.

The famous city of Chefchaouen, often referred to as The Blue City, is located in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. What makes it renowned is the great blue and white painted walls of its buildings. The color palette was initially meant to evoke a sense of coolness and protection from the everyday heat in that region. The city is further distinguished by its relaxed atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle, making it an ideal destination for vacationers looking to escape their bustling and hectic lives. The picturesque landscape is only accentuated by gorgeous sites like the spa resorts and Kasba fortifications, making Chefchaouen an unforgettable experience for all travelers.
